How to train for 5·4·3·2·WIN

Fifteen consecutive makes in 60 seconds sounds impossible until you break it into what it really is: five small skills plus clock management. Here's a shot-by-shot plan you can run in any driveway. (Full rules are in the challenge explainer.)

5 layups — bank the freebies fast

The layups aren't hard; hard is doing them fast without rushing the finish. Drill both hands, soft off the glass, and rebound your own make in stride. Target pace: all five inside 12 seconds. A blown layup is the most expensive miss in the run — it costs you a restart on your easiest shot.

4 free throws — the breathing checkpoint

You arrive at the line with your heart rate up. Build that into practice: sprint before every free-throw set. Same routine every time — one dribble, eyes on the back of the rim, exhale, shoot. Four in a row with a raised pulse is a skill of calm, not touch.

3 college threes — your rhythm shots

From the college line (22′ 1¾″), these are the shots you've taken your whole life — the job is footwork into the catch. Practice stepping into each attempt off your own rebound so no clock dies while you set your feet.

2 NBA threes — practice deeper than you need

The NBA line (23′ 9″) punishes short legs, not bad aim. Train from a step behind it so the real thing feels normal. Power comes from the legs — load the dip, don't sling the arms.

1 half-court — make it a shot, not a heave

People who make half-courters treat them as a real shot with real form: a running one-two gather and a high, legs-driven release. Finish every practice session with ten of them. You only ever need one — but it has to feel like something you do, not something you hope.
